FINAL DAY: BOB TV FILM FESTIVAL - GALA NIGHT

THE GALA NIGHT

The Exhibition Hall is near empty as most of the stalls have been pulled down. People exchange numbers and other contacts, share farewell hugs and salutations. Sets and equipments are being carted away in trolleys, and the crowd which was dispersed in many different directions pending on where interests lay are headed now for Hall 1 where the Gala Night is on.

As I write, my tears stream down the instrument of my expression and blur the words on my page. Okay, lie! I’m typing but still, the words are blurred because of the tears swelling in my eye … okay, enough. Deep breath, stiff upper lip, exhale. Better now.

Hall 1 is crowded and Yibo Koko, born entertainer, is on stage, cracking jokes and eliciting mad laughter. Charles Igwe, Emeka Mba, Sam Dede, Sam Loco Efe, and a host of other dignitaries are seated in front, clutching their bellies and reeling backwards in their chairs from Yibo’s jokes.

Emeka Mba has taken the podium and addressing the students present, reminds them they are indeed the future, and recounts his own journey with film, and how much he loves and desires to see it grow. Emeka commends all the entries in the University Challenge Short Story contest, remarking that the group effort harnessed to make the 16 minute films is indicative of the glory that awaits these young minds in the future of film in Nigeria. Emeka Mba’s speech, eloquent and stirring, encouraged and exhorted the finest in the youngsters, and charged them to keep growing in talent and skill.

Charles Igwe takes the microphone next, and in true Public Speaker fashion, makes a self-deprecating comment about not being a great speaker - and then goes ahead to make a great speech. The winner of the University Challenge is about to be announced, and Charles Igwe announces that all the participants in the competition are winners already, and praises all the entries.
